North Eastern region faces $75M in annual damages to property and agriculture from floods, which annually affect 3M people, over a 10-year average. Real-time weather data from the region is currently insufficient to meet this problem. NECTAR has incubated a start-up, Yobi Technologies, which has designed and manufactured low-cost weather stations costing less than a tenth of other market alternatives. NECTAR has installed 30 of these weather stations in Meghalaya, where they are sending real-time weather data. The weather data is feeding the start-up’s proprietary weather forecasting algorithms; the forecasts are relayed by SMS messages to key policymakers in the state government. The data is stored on servers in Shillong, where the team can use tools to visualize and act on the data.
